Here are just a few links to some helpful resources affiliated with the University and in the Bay Area community.

Child Care

University Early Chidhood Education Program provides child care for infants and pre-school children at UCB.

Bananas Child Care Information and Referral Service is a helpful service for finding either regular daily care or the occasional babysitter.


Public Schools
In the U.S., all children are eligible for free elementary and secondary education provided by the local public school district in the city where you reside. For more information, contact the appropriate office for your city of residence:

Albany Board of Education
Berkeley Unified School District
Oakland Unified School District
West Contra Costa Unified School District (for El Cerrito)

Other Resources

The University Section Club, Foreign Student Committee at UC Berkeley helps international students, scholars, and their families during their initial adjustment and throughout their stay. They provide the following services:

  • The Centre offers spouses and children of visiting foreign students and scholars an introduction to the community and a friendly place to meet every Thursday during the academic year. The Centre is located at the University YWCA, 2600 Bancroft Way, Berkeley.

  • Equipment Loan Center allows foreign students and scholars to borrow household items for a small fee. The Center is open every Wednesday from 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM during the Summer months, then from October through May, the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays from 12:30 PM - 3:30 PM. It is located in Building F on Haste Street, between Telegraph and Bowditch. Donations are welcome and tax-deductible.

The UC Berkeley Parents Network website is another excellent resource regarding day care and schools and living in the Bay Area with Kids.

Parents' Press is a free monthly newspaper that contains excellent information on private schools, after-school care, daycare, classes and recreational activities for children.

French Parents is a web site in French and English for international students and scholars in the U.S. who are parents.
