Any off-campus work authorization or reimbursement must be pre-approved by an adviser at Berkeley International Office before the date of the proposed work.
Professors, research scholars and short-term scholar participants in the (J-1) Exchange Visitor Program are only allowed to receive payment as specifically noted on their Form DS-2019 unless given prior written authorization by an International Scholar Adviser/Responsible Officer before accepting such payment. With this prior written authorization, a scholar may be compensated, paid, or reimbursed for occasional off-campus lectures, consultations, or seminars. Regular off-campus employment is rarely approved and requires an appointment to discuss the employment offer with an International Scholar Adviser at the Berkeley International Office office.
Scholars sponsored by Fulbright, or other Exchange Programs must contact their program sponsor for specific information and instructions.
Eligibility
To qualify for payment/compensation authorization the off-campus employment or activity must be:
- Short-term or occasional in nature
- An exchange of expertise which would further the goals of international educational exchange
- Related to the objectives for which the exchange visitor came to the U.S.
- Beneficial to the exchange visitor's professional career development with only incidental benefits to the employer. The primary benefit must be professional rather than financial.
