The health and safety of international students and scholars at UC Berkeley is our primary concern.  Not only does UC Berkeley's academic rigor cause stress, but a new, unfamiliar environment can compound the pressure that you may already be experiencing.  To succeed at UC Berkeley, it is essential that you take care of yourself.  Below are a few resources that can be helpful in coping with challenges of life at UC Berkeley.

Health and Wellness

General Health Matters
For registered students and scholars, visit the University Health Services.

Counseling Services
All registered students at UC Berkeley are eligible to see a counselor at the Counseling and Psychological Service (CPS), located on the 3rd floor of the Tang Center. Counselors are available to talk to you about any matter of personal concern either on a walk-in basis (for urgent matters), or by appointment.

CARE Services for Faculty and Staff
If you are employed by UC Berkeley, you are eligible to use CARE Services for counseling on a wide range of personal concerns.

UC Berkeley Online Health Topics
You can find materials and answers to common health questions on this A-Z Online Index of Health Topics designed specifically for the UC Berkeley community.

Safety

UCB Campus Police
The UC Berkeley police is a full-service department, working 24-hours a day, 7 days a week to serve the UCB community. See their publication, Safety Counts for information about crime prevention on campus and what you can do to stay safe.

Report suspicious activity
Blue light phones connect directly to UCPD. Don't hesitate to press the button on one of these phones. Let dispatchers know—

  • where you are
  • what you saw, or what happened
  • when you saw it
  • if it's still happening

Or connect directly to UCPD by dialing 510-642-3333 from your cell phone. Program that number into your mobile address book and give it a quick key for easy access. Be aware of strangers and react if something doesn't seem right.

Use UCPD Night Safety Services
Use UCPD Safety Services such as BearWALK or Owl Rides to get safely to and from campus and parking lots. Community Service Officers (CSO’s), student employees of UCPD, provide this service. They are uniformed, carry police radios and are trained in non-confrontational safety techniques.

The BearWALK Service operates every day of the year, providing a walking escort after dark until 2am. To request an escort, call 510/ 642-WALK (9255).

The Owl Service also operates 365 days a year. Call 510/ 642-6760 after 2am to request a van ride to a destination within service boundaries.

Bear Transit Night Safety Shuttles are also available.
