The Shih Loan program provides long-term loans to studentswho have completed two semesters at the University of California at Berkeley. The loan is interest free while a continuing registered student, and must be repaid beginning six months after completing studies at UC Berkeley. This loan fund is made possible by the generous donation of Mr. and Mrs. Jeff and Constance Shih.

  • Shih Loan applicants must be full-time registered students at UC Berkeley. Priority is given to students from China (including Hong Kong), Taiwan, and Singapore but is available to all qualified students who demonstrate need.
  • The Shih Loan is a long-term loan repaid after completing your studies at UC Berkeley.
  • Students may borrow one semester of non-resident tuition and fees ($14,189 undergraduates, $12,275 graduates) per academic year. Only one loan is allowed per year. The total amount of debt a student may incur with the Shih Loan may not exceed the equivalent of one year’s tuition and fees. You should carefully consider your need for a loan and your ability to repay the loan before deciding on an amount to borrow.
  • Repayment of the loan starts no later than six months following your last registered semester at Cal. The minimum monthly payment is $150 with a maximum repayment period of five years. There is no penalty for early repayment, or for payments larger than the required minimum.
  • No interest is charged on this loan while you remain a full time student pursuing a degree at UC Berkeley. Simple interest (approx. 6%) is charged at the time of your first payment.
  • A co-signer is required. The co-signer must be a U.S. citizen or Permanent Resident living in the U.S. and employed in a full-time position for at least the past year. The co-signer may not be anyone associated with the University (i.e. faculty, staff, or fellow students). If you have concerns about the co-signer requirement, please speak with an adviser at Berkeley International Office.
  • A limited number of loans are available during the course of the academic year and are made on a first-come-first-serve basis.
  • Applications are available at the Berkeley International Office counter. After completing the application, an interview is required with an adviser at Berkeley International Office. Please call the Berkeley International Office at 642-2818 to make an appointment for the interview.
  • During your final semester at Cal you must visit the Loans & Receivables office for an “exit interview” to make arrangements for your loan repayment.

The Shih Loan fund is a rotating fund. Repayment of your loan makes the money available to other students who come after you.
