On April 18, 2017 President Trump issued an Executive Order titled Buy America and Hire American

The "Buy American" provisions emphasize trade practices, and laws/policies about the use of goods, products and materials produced in the U.S.

The "Hire American" provisions call on the Secretary of State, the Attorney General, the Secretary of Labor and the Secretary of Homeland Security to "propose new rules and issue new guidance", and to crack down on fraud and abuse in immigration systems in order to protect American workers and their economic interests. It also calls on these four agencies to "suggest reforms to help ensure that H-1B visas are awarded to the most skilled or highest-paid petition beneficiaries." However, the EO provided no specific changes to any existing regulations, rules and policies, and included no definite timeline for government agencies to propose changes.

The White House Office of Press Secretary published a background briefing on the Buy American, Hire American Executive Order.

The Berkeley International Office will provide more updates as they become available.
