Unemployment
Unemployment for students with Academic Training authorization is not allowed. If for some reason you must terminate your employment, consult with an Adviser at Berkeley International Office (before your employment termnination date) to determine the best way to maintain legal status in the U.S.

In general, students are allowed a 30-day grace period from the last date of employment or the end of the AT authorization period, whichever comes first, to depart the U.S., change your status, or transfer your J-1 to a new program of study.

If you decide to leave the U.S., you must notify Berkeley International Office via email so that your student SEVIS record can be updated.

Changing Employers
If you decide to terminate your employment and accept a job offer elsewhere in the U.S., you may do so as long as the new job is related to your field of study. You will, however, need a new work permit from Berkeley International Office before you can start working at the new job. Follow the Application Instructions as before, when you applied for the initial Academic Training work authorization.
