If you have been withdrawn from the University for a semester or more and plan to return to the University as a full-time student in F-1 or J-1 status, follow the steps below to request a new I-20 (F-1) or DS-2019 (J-1) document from Berkeley International Office:

For Summer Only

  1. Complete your Summer Session online enrollment.
  2. Send an email to InternationalOffice@berkeley.edu explaining your situation and need for a new I-20 or DS-2019. An adviser will give you instructions on the procedures for your particular case.

Returning for Summer Session and Continuing in Fall

  1. Apply for Readmission for the Fall semester before you return to the U.S. to avoid delays in your fall registration.
  2. Complete your Summer Session online enrollment.
  3. Send an email to InternationalOffice@berkeley.edu explaining your situation and need for a new I-20 or DS-2019. An adviser will give you instructions on the procedures for your particular case.

If your readmission is approved in advance of your arrival, a new I-20 or DS-2019 will be prepared for you that covers the summer, fall and any semesters beyond needed to complete your program.

Returning in the Fall or Spring Term
To return to UC Berkeley in the fall or spring terms as a full-time student, you must first be readmitted to the University. Upon readmission approval, you will be granted access to the Nonimmigrant Information Form (NIF), the online application for requesting your new I-20 or DS-2019 document. The NIF includes instructions for sending your request to our office for processing.
