Who should attend an Arrival Check-in Meeting?
You are required to attend an Arrival Check-in Meeting if you are a summer international student:

  • new to the U.S.*
  • transferring from another U.S. school *
  • visiting from another U.S. school (but not transferring)
  • returning to a UC Berkeley degree program (after an absence from the University for one or more semesters)
  • with any non-immigrant status (including B-1/B-2, E-2, F-2, J-2, H-4, L-1/L-2, WB/WT, etc...)

*Degree students continuing into the Fall semester must also attend a Fall 2009 New Student Check In.

What happens at the meetings?
You will meet International Student Advisers from Berkeley International Office who will present important visa and immigration information and complete final legal paperwork. After you have completed the Check-In meeting, you will receive written approval to obtain your Cal1Card (student photo identification card).

How do I get my UC Berkeley student idenfication card?
The UC Berkeley student Identification card is called the Cal1Card. At the end of the Arrival Check-in meeting, an Adviser will give you a confirmation letter to take to the Cal1Card office. There, you will turn in your confirmation letter and have your picture taken. The Cal1Card will be ready within minutes after taking the picture. See the Cal1Card web site for hours and location.

Which Arrival Check-in Meeting should I attend?
You need attend only one of the meetings associated with your Summer Session program, as listed below. If you are enrolled in more than one summer session (for example, sessions A and D), you must attend the meeting scheduled for your first session of enrollment only.

What if I miss my Arrival Meeting?
If you miss your Arrival meeting, or if you cannot attend one of the scheduled meetings for your first session, see an Adviser at Berkeley International Office immediately. Delaying your attendance at an arrival meeting later than the one scheduled for your first session of enrollment may negatively affect your legal status in the U.S.

What should I bring to the meeting?
Bring your passport and I-94 card (you will receive this at the U.S. port of entry). If you are an F-1 student, also bring your I-20. If you are a J-1 student, bring your DS-2019.
