If you have been admitted for a degree program starting in the Fall term, you must complete an online form called the Nonimmigrant Information Form (NIF) to get an I-20 (F-1) or DS-2019 (J-1) document for your new degree program.
If you have decided to start your degree program early by enrolling in the UC Berkeley Summer Session program, you must enroll in full-time units (if summer is your first semester in the U.S. as an F-1). You will need to request an I-20 or DS-2019 to cover both summer and fall programs. Follow these steps to ensure that you get the correct dates on your document:
- Enroll in Summer Session using their online registration system. Indicate your plans for attendance at UC Berkeley as a Summer + Fall student on the registration form.
- Complete the NIF. In the "student information" section, you will be asked "Will you be attending Summer Session at UC Berkeley prior to the Fall term?" Check "yes" in the box and enter your summer session start date.
- Print a copy of your summer class schedule and attach it to your NIF application. Mail everything together to the Berkeley International Office.
Transfer Students Starting in Summer
Iif you are a transfer student admitted for a degree program in the Fall term and you are beginning your program early by enrolling in Summer Session courses, full-time enrollment is not required if your UC Berkeley Transfer I-20 or DS-2019 start date is for the Fall semester.
