New (non-UC Berkeley) Students
If you are currently....

    • outside of the U.S.
    • in the U.S. as an F/J student
    • in the U.S. as a nonimmigrant
    • a U.S. citizen or permanent resident

...you must begin the enrollment process through the Summer Session online registration system. Enrollment usually opens in February each year. The enrollment system will guide you through to determine what type of immigration status you will need while at UC Berkeley.

International Fall Admits Starting in Summer
If you have been admitted for a degree program in the Fall term and you will start your program early by enrolling in Summer Session, you will need to use the Summer Session online registration system in addition to a form called the Nonimmigrant Information Form (NIF) to request your I-20 (F-1) or DS-2019 (J-1). When completing these forms, write a note on both to indicate that you are a Fall admit so we can prepare an I-20 (F-1) or DS 2019(J-1) to cover your summer and fall program dates. See also Fall Admits Starting in Summer.

Continuing UC Berkeley Students
You will use Summer TeleBEARS to register for your courses. If you have an
F-1 or J-1 student status, you will not need to request a new I-20 or DS-2019 for summer classes unless they will expire before the end of the summer.

Returning UC Berkeley Students
If you have withdrawn from a degree program at UC Berkeley for a semester or more, and you are planning to return as an F-1 or J-1 student in the Summer, you will need to use the Summer Session online registration system. Once your Readmission for the Fall term has been approved, you will have access to Telebears to enroll in your Fall courses and the NIF for requesting your I-20 or DS-2019. For more information, see our web pages for Returning Students.
