You may need an I-20(F-1) or DS-2019(J-1) to enter the U.S. on a student visa to attend Summer Session. The points below will help you to determine whether or not to request one.
Students Who Need I-20/DS 2019 Documents
You will need an I-20 (F-1) or DS-2019 (J-1) from UC Berkeley if you plan to be enrolled full-time in Berkeley Summer Sessions and if the semester prior to summer you are:
- Outside the United States
- Attending another U.S. school as a F-1 or J-1 student, and you do NOT plan to resume your studies at that school after Summer Session
- In the U.S. in another nonimmigrant status and you want to change to F-1 or J-1 status (contact the Berkeley International Office office immediately for instructions. This process can take several months or may require travel outside the U.S.)
- A UC Berkeley student returning to school after withdrawal from a degree program for one or more semesters
Students Who Do NOT Need an I-20/DS-2019
You do NOT need an I-20(F-1) or DS 2019(J-1) document if prior to the Summer Sessions program you will be:
- Attending another U.S. school in F-1 or J-1 status and you plan to resume your studies at that school immediately after your Summer Session program. If so, you are allowed to take classes part-time or full-time at UC Berkeley during Summer Session only.
- In the U.S. in a non-immigrant status other than as a F-1 or J-1 student and that status allows you to be a full-time or part-time student.
- A continuing F-1 or J-1 UC Berkeley student who was enrolled in the spring semester prior to Summer Session. You should already have an I-20 or DS-2019; check the expiration date to make sure it will remain valid for the summer.
How To Obtain an I-20 or DS-2019
As you complete your Summer Session enrollment, you will be asked a series of questions to determine whether you need an I-20 or DS-2019. If it is determined that you do need one, you will be automatically directed to an online "Visa Application Form." After you have completed this form, the information will be sent to Berkeley International Office. We will then prepare the appropriate document for you and deliver it to you by mail. More details will be provided during your Summer Session enrollment process.
