If you are a F-1 or J-1 student attending another U.S. institution immediately prior to your UC Berkeley Summer Sessions program and you do not plan to resume your studies at that school, you must complete the following steps to request an I-20 (F-1) or DS-2019 (J-1) form from UC Berkeley to "transfer" your record to us.

Transfer Eligibility Requirements

F-1 Students
F-1 International students are only considered "transfer students" for immigration purposes if you are currently in valid F-1 status and no more than 5 months has passed from your last date of attendance OR your last day of OPT (whichever is later).

The deadline for F-1 students to request a transfer is 60 days after the program completion or OPT end date, whichever is later.

J-1 Students
J-1 students who wish to transfer from their current program sponsor to UCB must consult with the International Student Advisers at both schools. To be eligible for a transfer, the J-1 category must remain the same and the J-1 must request a transfer before his or her DS-2019 program end date and enroll full time in the next available Summer Session.

If the J-1 student plans to re-enter the US following the transfer, the J-1 student must apply for a new J-1 visa with the new institution's DS-2019.  If the J-1 student remains in the U.S. between transfer institutions and does not leave the country, a new J-1 visa stamp is not required.

Transfer Process for Summer Session

  1. Print out the Transfer Verification Form (download PDF here). Complete the Student Information section.

  2. Go to the International Student Adviser at your school and inform him/her of your plans to attend UC Berkeley following your program. Ask the Adviser to complete your Transfer Verification Form and to "release your SEVIS record" to the University of California at Berkeley. There can be no more than five months between the end date at your current institution and the start date at UC Berkeley Summer Sessions.

  3. Register Online for Summer Sessions. Enter your "release date" (this is the day that the advisor at your current school will send your SEVIS I-20 electronically to UC Berkeley) into the space provided on the registration form.

  4. Enroll in a full-time course load. Full-time enrollment is required to remain in the U.S. legally as an F-1 student.

  5. Fax to Summer Sessions at 510-642-2877 or email intl_summer@berkeley.edu with a PDF attachment copies of the following:

    • Financial records to Summer Sessions that show you are able to support your studies for the summer. (see "Required Funding")

    • Passport - biographic page (page showing date of birth etc.)

    • Transfer Verification Form (completed). You do NOT need to mail the original - keep it for your records.

If you are admitted to UC Berkeley for the fall semester following your summer program, there are a few more steps you will need to complete. See Fall Admits Starting in Summer.
