J-1 Student Non-Degree

The J‐1 Student Non-Degree Program

The J-1 Student Non-Degree is coming to UC Berkeley to engage in a full-time course of study including classroom and/or research. 51% or more of funding must be from non-personal funds.

UCB departments are urged to consult with Berkeley International Office at least 2-4 months prior to a student non-degree start date to determine eligibility for this program. Contact jscholar@berkeley.edu.

Eligibility Criteria

The student must:

  • 51% or more of funding must be from non-personal funds ($2000/month minimum funding requirement plus department fees).
  • must provide documentation of funding that includes the living expenses ($2000/month) plus any departmental fees
  • be currently enrolled and pursuing an undergraduate program at an accredited post-secondary academic institution outside the United States.
  • have sufficient finances for him/herself and any dependents for the entire stay in the U.S., including housing and living expenses.
  • have sufficient English language skills to function on a day‐to‐day basis in the program.
  • Be engaged in a full-time course of study including classroom and/or research.
  • Site of activity is UC Berkeley.
