F-1 Students

The F-1 status is the most common status used by international students in the U.S. Most international students at UC Berkeley have F-1 status.  More information about the differences between the F and J status can be found at F-1 vs. J-1 Comparison.

J-1 Students

The J-1 status is generally for students in specific educational exchange programs such as the UC Education Abroad Program (EAP), Fulbright, LASPAU, DAAD, AmidEast, or others.  It may also be used by the University for students in degree programs. To be eligible for a J-1, students must receive a majority of their financial support from sources other than personal funds. More information about the differences between the F and J status can be found at F-1 vs. J-1 Comparison.
