Starting in Summer

If you have decided to start your classes at UC Berkeley in the summer, you must enroll in full-time units and request an I-20 or DS-2019 that starts in summer and covers your degree program. Follow these instructions to ensure that you get the correct dates on your document:

NEW UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS

  • Apply for Freshman EdgeTransfer EdgeSummer Bridge or Global Edge and enroll in Summer courses before completing your NIF. For Summer Bridge, see instructions below.
  • If you are currently attending another US institution, you may not need to be full time. For more information, please click here.
  • Once enrolled, complete your NIF and upload proof of summer enrollment.

NEW GRADUATE STUDENTS

  • Please contact your Graduate Department  directly for assistance with summer enrollment. If you and your graduate department encounter problems with summer registration, please contact summer@berkeley.edu with the subject line "Newly Admitted International Grad Student Needing Summer Registration" for assistance with summer registration. 
  • NOTE: Summer "bootcamp" classes that do not carry units are NOT considered for an I-20/DS-2019 summer start date.
  • If you are currently attending another US institution, you may not need to be full time. For more information, please click here.
  • Once enrolled, complete your NIF and upload proof of summer enrollment.

FALL READMITTED STUDENTS

  • You must first be Readmitted. See important information about Returning to UCB.
  • After your Readmission is approved, email summer@berkeley.edu with the subject line: "UCB Rate Verification - SID (input your SID) - Fall Readmission." In the body of the email you will need to explain that you are Readmitted for Fall and need access to summer enrollment as a degree seeking student. 
  • You must be Readmitted for Fall before getting an I-20/DS-2019 that starts in Summer. If you foresee a timing problem, please contact nif@berkeley.edu.
  • Once enrolled, complete your NIF and upload proof of summer enrollment.

SUMMER AS LAST TERM STUDENTS

  • If you are returning to Berkeley in the Summer and you will complete your degree in that summer, you must meet with your College Advisor first to ensure you can take the classes you need to graduate. Readmission is not required.
  • Then email summer@berkeley.edu with the subject line: "UCB Rate Verification - SID  (input your SID)- Summer Degree." In the body of the email you will need to explain that you are a returning student who will complete your degree in summer and request access to summer enrollment as a degree seeking student. You may need confirmation from your College/major advisor. 
  • Once enrolled, contact nif@berkeley.edu to get access to the NIF. You will need to upload proof of summer enrollment.

RETURNING TO FILE A DISSERTATION (Ph.D. students only)

  • You may or may not need an I-20 or DS 2019 document. You should discuss the matter with an Advisor in Berkeley International Office so that we can determine the most appropriate status for you depending on your length of stay in the U.S. and your future plans.

COMPLETING THE NIF

Complete the NIF to obtain your I-20 or DS-2019. To ensure you get a Summer start date on your document, in the NIF, you will be asked, "Will you be attending Summer Session at UC Berkeley prior to the Fall term?" Check "yes" and select the appropriate Summer Session start date. You will need to upload proof of full-time summer enrollment from Cal Central.

Summer Bridge Program

If you are invited for the Summer Bridge Program:

  1. Apply and enroll in Summer Bridge
  2. Complete the NIF. In the NIF, you will be asked "Will you be attending Summer Session at UC Berkeley prior to the Fall term?" Check "yes" in the box and select the Summer Session C June 20 start date.
  3. Request a Letter of Enrollment Confirmation from the Summer Bridge Program (sbridge@berkeley.edu) and upload it to your NIF application. You are not required to show proof of enrollment in classes for the NIF, but you must provide the Letter of Enrollment Confirmation listed above from Summer Bridge.
