Fall Admits Starting or Returning in Summer

Starting in Summer

If you have decided to start your classes at UC Berkeley in the summer, you must enroll in full-time units and request an I-20 or DS-2019 that starts in summer and covers your degree program. Follow these instructions to ensure that you get the correct dates on your document:

New Undergraduate Students

  • Apply for Freshman Edge, Transfer Edge, Summer Bridge or Global Edge and enroll in Summer courses before completing your NIF. For Summer Bridge, see instructions below.
  • F-1 and J-1 international students must enroll full-time. If you are currently attending another U.S. institution and will transfer your SEVIS record, full time enrollment is not required. For more information, please see our Transfer Students page.
  • Once enrolled, complete your NIF and upload proof of summer enrollment.

New Graduate Students

  • If your program is a Summer Admit program, you will be able to enroll in summer via Cal Central. Currently included programs are MPH (11-month program), Health & Medical Sciences, MPA, Education (Special Ed), MBA, and LLM.

  • All other new Graduate students who wish to enroll in the summer prior to their first fall term must enroll as non-degree visiting students through the Summer Session Application process.

Fall Readmitted Students

  • Students seeking readmission must apply for readmission through their college/department. Please review our Returning Students page for important information.
  • Students who plan to attend Summer Sessions and readmit for Fall should wait until the readmission is approved and processed. Once you have been readmitted, you will be able to enroll in Summer Sessions in CalCentral as a degree-seeking student.
  • F-1 and J-1 international students must enroll full-time. If you are currently attending another U.S. institution and will transfer your SEVIS record, full time enrollment is not required. For more information, please see our Transfer Students page.
  • Once enrolled in summer classes, complete your NIF (the NIF will appear after the readmission is processed) and upload your proof of summer enrollment.
  • You must be readmitted for the fall semester before getting an I-20 or DS-2019 that starts in summer. If you foresee a timing problem, please contact nif@berkeley.edu.

Summer as Last Term Students

  • If you are returning to Berkeley in the summer and you will complete your degree that summer, you must contact your college advisor first to ensure you can take the classes you will need to graduate. Readmission is not required.

  • Your college advisor will contact records staff at the Office of the Registrar so that you are able to enroll in the summer term in CalCentral. These requests can only come from your college advisor, the Graduate Division, or a Graduate Student Affairs Officer.

  • Once enrolled, contact nif@berkeley.edu to get access to the NIF. You will need to upload proof of summer enrollment. If you will not be enrolled full-time, you must submit a Final Semester Reduced Course Load as part of your NIF.

Returning to File a Dissertation (Ph.D. students only)

  • You may or may not need an I-20 or DS 2019 document. You should contact Berkeley International Office so that we can determine the most appropriate status for you depending on your length of stay in the U.S. and your future plans.

Completing the NIF

Complete the NIF to obtain your I-20 or DS-2019. Unless otherwise indicated, the NIF will be a Task Item on your Cal Central dashboard. To ensure you get a summer start date on your document, in the NIF, you will be asked, "Will you be attending Summer Session at UC Berkeley prior to the Fall term?" Check "yes" and select the appropriate Summer Session start date. You will need to upload proof of full-time summer enrollment from Cal Central. See more about the NIF here.

Summer Bridge Program

If you are invited for the Summer Bridge Program:

  1. Apply and enroll in Summer Bridge
  2. Complete the NIF. In the NIF, you will be asked "Will you be attending Summer Session at UC Berkeley prior to the Fall term?" Check "yes" in the box and select the Summer Session C start date.
  3. Request a Letter of Enrollment Confirmation from the Summer Bridge Program (sbridge@berkeley.edu) and upload it to your NIF application. You are not required to show proof of enrollment in classes for the NIF, but you must provide the Letter of Enrollment Confirmation listed above from Summer Bridge.
