TN Mexican and Canadian Professional Workers

This visa classification is limited to Canadian and Mexican citizens and became available on January 1994 as a part of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). On July 2020, the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) replaced NAFTA. The criteria for TN admission under the USMCA is the same as under NAFTA.

The TN category permits Canadian or Mexican citizens entry to the U.S. to be employed in certain designated professions, and/or engage in certain designated professional activities. Under the regulations, "professional level" means those undertakings which require that, for successful completion, the individual has at least a baccalaureate degree or appropriate credentials demonstrating status as a professional.

UC Berkeley Employment

Campus units consult with Berkeley International Office before a prospective employee enters the U.S. as a TN to determine if this is the appropriate status in a particular case.

If your department at UC Berkeley is interested in supporting a petition for you to have TN status, please have your department contact an Employment-Based Adviser at 510 642 2818 or at h1b@berkeley.edu for more information.
