Interested in working in the U.S. during or after your program? 

There are multiple types of work authorizations available to F-1 and J-1 international students. Each type of work authorization has different rules, application processes, and timelines. Some are authorized by Berkeley International Office (BIO) in just a few days and others must be approved by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and take a few months. Students may wish to take advantage of the numerous student jobs available on campus. Click here for details.

F-1 Curricular Practical Training (CPT)

Off-campus work permission for current F-1 students seeking experience in their field of study.

F-1 Optional Practical Training (OPT)

Post-graduation work permission for F-1 students who plan to seek employment in their fields of study within the US.

J-1 On-Campus Fellowship Authorization

J-1 students need to apply for authorization before receiving any on-campus payment, scholarships, or fellowships.

J-1 Academic Training (AT)

Off-campus work authorization for J-1 students seeking employment in their field of study; can be used before or after graduation/completion of program.

F-1 OPT 24-Month STEM Extension

An extension of F-1 12-Month OPT work permission. For students in designated STEM fields only.
