Arrival Notification Requirements

People Walking On Campus

Welcome to UC Berkeley!  We look forward to meeting you at the Scholar Information Meeting (SIM), which you are required to attend within the first two weeks of your arrival.

If you are coming to UC Berkeley from within the U.S.:

Before your UC Berkeley start date, schedule an appointment with a Berkeley International Office adviser (510-642-2818) to discuss the transfer/change of status process.  Do NOT complete the steps below.

If You Are Coming From Outside the U.S.:

To ensure a smooth transition through U.S. Customs and Border Patrol and to the Berkeley campus, you are required to notify Berkeley International Office of your arrival date as soon as possible by completing the steps below.  If arriving later than initially planned, you may, in some cases, need an amended J-1 Form DS-2019 to avoid problems at the U.S. port-of-entry.

Your Form DS-2019 will help you log on to the website noted below. To log on, your information must be entered exactly as it is listed on your Form DS-2019, including your SEVIS ID number (the number in the upper right-hand corner of your DS-2019 that begins with the letter “N,” followed by 10 digits).

Step 1:  Before Your Arrival in the U.S.

Before your DS-2019 start date (but no later than nine days after the start date on your DS-2019), log on at http://jvs.berkeley.edu/.  Complete the information on that site.  Please also contact your UC Berkeley host department to inform them of your arrival dates and U.S. residential address (if known).

Step 2:  After Your Arrival

No later than nine days after your DS-2019 start date, log on to http://jvs.berkeley.edu/ again to inform us of your actual date of arrival in the U.S. and your local, U.S. residential address.  This can include a hotel or temporary residence.  It cannot be a Post Office (P.O.) Box or Departmental address.

The information you provide in the two steps above is required by the U.S. government; it is important that it be completed accurately and as early as possible.
